ART PROJECT
Women of Multitude
A colourful collection of conversations and abstract energetic portraits, painted onto mannequin body sculptures.
How it all began…
Born through an attempt to understand her own story + identity, this project has become a space for other women to tell their stories, feel heard and be seen too, in every facet of their being…
One solo Christmas weekend, Chelsea purchased 2 mannequin bodies off facebook marketplace and “painted her feelings” onto them. She had read about women writing all their horrible thoughts about themselves and their bodies onto mannequins as a way to externalise the thoughts and bring them out into the light. So she gave it a crack and found it to be rather enjoyable. An idea was born…
She tracked down some mannequins (initially she wanted 50 but soon realised her beautiful adhd brain was unrealistically overcommitting) so she settled on 33 for the year of her 33rd birthday. She turned 37 this year and the project is still going.
Chelsea plans to launch a podcast of the interview chats with women from all walks of life, on the topic of visibility, expression, purpose, belonging and identity. The conversations have inspired a collection of artworks - energetic abstract portraits of each of the women who participate, which will all be exhibited to the public when it’s complete.
“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you”.
