Women Witnessed

A colourful collection of conversations and abstract energetic portraits, painted onto mannequin body sculptures.

How it all began…

An attempt to understand & improve the relationship with her own body & identity…

Chelsea purchased 2 mannequin bodies off facebook marketplace and “painted her feelings” onto them. She had read about women writing all their horrible thoughts about themselves and their bodies onto mannequins as a way to externalise the thoughts and bring them out into the light. So she gave it a crack and found it to be rather enjoyable.

During a particular period of isolation and feeling quite alone in her struggles with identity and body image issues (eating disorders etc) she decided she was tired of hiding and that if a part of her was dying to be seen and witnessed, that other women must experience this too.

She tracked down 33 mannequins (initially she wanted 50 but realised her adhd brain was unrealistically overcommitting again) and settled on 33 for the year of her 33rd birthday. She turns 37 this year and the project is still going.

Chelsea plans to launch a podcast of interview chats with women from all walks of life, on the topic of visibility, expression, purpose, belonging and identity. The conversations inspire a collection of artworks - energetic abstract portraits of each woman who participates, which will all be exhibited to the public when complete.

“There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside of you”.
